On the Uselessness of Astronomers

Astronomy is often regarded as a useless field that offers no practical help in our daily lives. As an astronomer, I understand this criticism. And yet, humanity has never abandoned astronomy; for thousands of years, we have continued to practice it. The reason we keep looking up at the night sky and thinking about the universe may be that astronomy has its own kind of usefulness—one we do not easily perceive in ordinary life. This is an astronomer’s honest confession about just how useless astronomy may be, and why, nevertheless, we continue to live with our eyes turned toward the sky.

A Conversation on Lydia Davis by Translators Seo Jane and Lee Ju-hye

Widely regarded as “the master of a literary form largely of her own invention.” Lydia Davis is known for her singular style of writing. In this conversation, translators Seo Jane and Lee Juhye, who have translated Davis’s works into Korean, come together to discuss her distinctive literary world. Since beginning her career in the 1970s, Lydia Davis has experimented with forms of writing that blur the boundaries between poetry, fiction, and essays, producing works considered “distinctive voice has never been easy to fit into conventional categories,” In doing so, she ultimately created a category entirely her own. Though deceptively simple in appearance, her writing offers meticulous observations of the complexities of everyday life and emotional truth, while revealing something mysterious, alien, unfamiliar, and playfully inventive in highly compressed form. This conversation will explore the creative secrets behind Lydia Davis’s remarkable work.
